ABOUT JULIE

Julie Mack is a versatile and charismatic vocalist whose repertoire extends from the swinging standards and bittersweet ballads of jazz and the American Songbook to the swaying samba rhythms of Brazil.   Julie makes her musical home in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area jazz and Brazilian music community, performing regularly with the finest instrumentalists at clubs, restaurants, festivals, and public and private events.

Born in the hip city of Hackensack, New Jersey, where legendary sessions were recorded a few years before her arrival on the scene, she grew up immersed in musical theater and choral music, and began singing jazz as a student in Boston.  She lived in Jakarta, Indonesia; New York; and Tokyo before moving to the DC area with her family in 1999.  Praised for her innate ability to connect with her audience, whether in an intimate jazz room or concert hall, Julie’s buoyant style and expressiveness show influences of Blossom Dearie, Anita O’Day, contemporaries such as Stacey Kent, and Brazilian singers such as Paula Morelenbaum, Elis Regina and Gal Costa.  Her EP, "The Sweetest Sounds," with Wayne Wilentz (piano), David Jernigan (bass and guitar), Roberto Berimbau (percussion), Jim West (drums) and Lyle Link (tenor saxophone), highlights both jazz and Brazilian music.

Julie offers a range of groups suitable for any venue.  Her Brazilian band, Encantada, presents polished, high-energy shows combining Brazilian samba, bossa nova and baiao with U.S. jazz.  As the Julie Mack Trio or Quartet (or an ensemble of any size from duo to large group), Julie's band focuses on swinging jazz, blues and American Songbook standards for private events, clubs and restaurants, and will mix in Julie's Brazilian and French repertoire for the perfect signature blend.  The Julie Mack / David Jernigan Duo provides an intimate, hip and soulful sound for art openings, smaller venues & concerts, showing just what a voice and an upright bass can do with jazz and Brazilian tunes.

In addition to her gigging schedule, Julie is busy working on arrangements for a full-length CD that will combine all of her influences, and promoting Encantada and her other groups for more concerts and private events.
